Up for sale is a fascinating piece of 19th-century maritime and military history. This massive 23 by 38 inch wood-engraved panorama depicts the joint Allied Fleets of England and France maneuvering in the Baltic Sea during the Crimean War (1853 to 1856).This print was issued as a free promotional supplement with the short-lived British newspaper, The Picture Times, on October 13, 1855—shortly after the historic allied bombardment of the Russian fortress at Sveaborg. Because The Picture Times had a much smaller circulation and lifespan than its rival, The Illustrated London News, supplements from this publication are significantly harder to find.
This original 170 plus year-old print is in Fair to Good antique condition, showing the authentic patina of its age:
Fold Lines: As is standard for this ephemeral newspaper insert, original fold lines are present from when it was packaged into the paper.
Paper Quality: The mid-Victorian newsprint shows expected mild tanning, toning, and minor foxing (age spots) consistent with age.
Edges and Seams: There is minor wear and wrinkling along the margins and occasional tiny splits at the fold intersections, but the central image remains strong, highly detailed, and completely intact. There are also some tiny \"chew marks\" along center horizontal fold line. Some splitting along fold lines (needs additional archival tape).
This print should frame up nicely. Print is priced accordingly, on the low end of market value.
