This Illustrated Holy Bible is a beautifully bound hardcover edition published by Baird & Dillon in 1884. This personalized Bible includes Monk and Williams Marriage Certificate, making it a unique and special addition to any religious or spiritual collection as well as any genealogist or descendants . With illustrations and printed in English, this original Bible from North America is a valuable and timeless piece for any collector or individual seeking a meaningful and historic book.
This Bible is absolutely stunning and is in excellent condition for its age. The gold depictions on the leather cover is still bright and prominent as well as on the pages. The binding is still completely intact and no pages are ripped or torn out. The very first page is separated from the binding , as shown in photos.
This beautifully preserved cover confirms that this is an exceptionally clean example of a Victorian-era molded leather binding. The condition of the exterior gold gilding and the deep, geometric beveling is excellent, showing only minor, expected shelf wear on the outermost left corners.
The marriage record inside this Family Bible for Monk and Williams is rare because the 1890 US federal census was almost entirely destroyed by a fire.
A handcrafted embroidered bookmark with the newlyweds initials \"W&M\" with floral details in still in this Bible which serves as a rare piece of personal social history.
The Officiant: Reverend A. G. Morton, the Baptist minister who signed the document, was an active religious figure in the region. He frequently performed weddings and led services for families throughout the Luzerne County boroughs during the late 1880s and 1890s.
The elaborate gold-stamped iconography featured in the circular corner medallions on the cover and back represent traditional biblical motifs popular in late 19th-century religious publishing:
- Top Left: The Star of David interlaced with a cross, paired with a small heart bearing the Christogram initials \"IHS\" (representing Jesus).
- Top Right: The Tablets of the Law (The Ten Commandments) written in stylized Hebrew script, positioned above an ornamental key.
- Bottom Left: A Christian Cross with a descending Dove, representing the Holy Spirit and peace.
- Bottom Right: The Lamb of God (Agnus Dei) holding a victory flag, seated beneath an open book or scrolls.
