Antique 1895-97 Bavarian Cavalry Regimental Stein Lithophane Josef Mayer For Sale

The base contains a hidden lithophane image of a courting couple, visible when held to a light. The original figural cavalryman-on-horse lid finial is also present but detached, as photographed.The inscription around the top reads essentially:“1. Schw. Reiter Regt. ‘Prinz Carl v. Bayern’ 2 Esk. 95/97”That identifies it as the 1st Bavarian Heavy Cavalry Regiment “Prinz Carl/Karl von Bayern,” 2nd Squadron, with the dates 1895–1897. The regiment was based in Munich, and historical material confirms the 1st Heavy Cavalry Regiment “Prinz Karl von Bayern” and its distinctive Bavarian cavalry uniform. The name around the base reads “Reiter Josef Mayer”. “Reiter” here means cavalryman, so this appears to have been Josef Mayer’s personalized service/reservist stein commemorating his 1895–1897 military service.One inscription says “Mein erster Angriff!!” (“My first attack!!”), humorously depicting his romantic “attack” on a woman while still mounted. Another reads approximately “Ich hab gedient zu Pferd zu Fuß, hab auch gegeben manchen Kuß!” — roughly, “I served on horseback and on foot, and gave many a kiss as well!” The ribbon along the bottom says “Erinnerung an meine Dienstzeit” — “In memory of my time in service.”
