Every one here is still sealed shut.
Size: 1 1/2" x 3/4" Box ~ Unopened New Old Stock.
This one's a single box: a small cream wax block, notched with a cross on one face, sealed inside its original wrapper along with a folded orange leaflet. The box art is printed twice over for two markets - "Glattolin," "Trade Mark. Registered.," "Made in Germany" on one face, "Glettoline," "Marque Deposee," "Importe d'Allemagne" on the next, plus "Glattolina" and "Glaettolin" elsewhere on the box. The picture faces carry the compass-and-dividers trademark and a mustached fellow working a stiff collar.
The leaflet is the fun part. It promises Glattolin "makes the edges of your collars and cuffs feel like velvet and saves your temper," calls itself "a boon to all with short necks," and gives its directions plain: "Rub the edges of the collar with the notch in the block and it will instantly become perfectly smooth." The same sheet also advertises "Purifin" antiseptic ("Best after Shaving") and "Cutoline" styptic pencils - a little grooming line, all on one page.
Why this was worth selling: collars in this era weren't part of the shirt, they were separate, heavily starched, and stiff enough to chafe. Troy, New York built a whole industry on the detachable collar after Hannah Montague started cutting hers off to wash separately back in 1827 - Troy became known as "the Collar City." H. G. Wells' Kipps bought a set of tall collars and found they "made his neck quite sore and left a red mark under his ears" - Glattolin was made for exactly that.
No maker's name is printed anywhere on it, just the registered Glattolin trademark, and there's no date - dealers who handle these place them in the 1910s. Small footnote: "Cutoline" is still a name on styptic pencils today, made in Portugal - same name, no connection to this collar wax, in its original box, with leaflet
