Antique 19th Century Hungarian-Slovak Folk Textile Fragment – Hand Embroidery & Bobbin Lace
Description:
Up for sale is a stunning, authentic 19th-century textile fragment from the Hungarian-Slovak border region of Central/Eastern Europe. Pieces of this exact style, technique, and era are preserved in major museum institutions, including the textile archives of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Originally part of a traditional regional folk costume (Kroj)—most likely a decorative sleeve cuff or section of a ceremonial headdress—this piece is an exceptional example of historical European textile artistry.
Design & Construction Details:
* Embroidery: The main body features incredibly dense, hand-stitched heavy dark silk embroidery in stylized floral, leaf, and traditional heart motifs executed over a fine muslin backing.
* Lace Work: The panels are hand-joined by a central lattice-work bobbin lace insertion featuring woven dark accent threads. The entire piece is finished with a beautifully preserved, scalloped cream bobbin lace border featuring a vibrant yellow/gold woven contrast edge.
* Reverse Side: The back of the piece beautifully highlights its authentic 19th-century construction, featuring the original plain-weave stabilization framing ribbons, hand-tied knots, and visible hand-sewn whipstitches joining the lace to the textile elements.
Dimensions:
* Total Width: Approx. 13.5 inches (edge to edge)
* Total Height: Approx. 8 inches
* Main Embroidered Body Width: Approx. 11.5 inches
Condition:
Excellent antique condition given its age of well over 100 years. The embroidery remains incredibly tight and structural with no major missing areas or heavy deterioration. The silk retains its deep color, and the yellow accent lace remains wonderfully bright. There are a few light, fine trailing threads on the reverse side as is standard for genuine handwork of this era. Unwashed and unaltered—stored in a smoke-free environment.
This is a museum-quality piece perfect for textile collectors, framing, design inspiration, or study.
