Antique Australian HACBS Ceremonial Regalia Collar – David Jones Sydney – c.1906–1930
Description
Authentic antique Australian ceremonial regalia collar of the HACBS (Hibernian Australasian Catholic Benefit Society), made by David Jones Limited – Regalia Makers, Sydney N.S.W. The original sewn maker's label is clearly present and legible.
This piece dates to the early 20th century (circa 1906–1930), based on the "David Jones Limited" designation and the known period of regalia production by David Jones in Sydney. David Jones, founded in 1838, operated specialist workshops producing ceremonial, fraternal, and ecclesiastical regalia during this era. The HACBS was a prominent Irish-Catholic friendly society, established in 1868, providing sickness and funeral benefits to members across Australia and New Zealand.
The collar is made from deep green velvet with a diamond-quilted green silk lining, and features extensive hand-worked bullion embroidery in gold and silver-toned metal thread. The central emblem displays the society initials "HACBS" above a radiant Celtic cross, flanked by crowned heraldic shields and shamrocks, over a scrolled banner bearing the society motto "Faith – Hope – Charity." The upper right carries an embroidered "PP" monogram — the designation for a Past President — indicating this collar belonged to a senior lodge officer. Finished with metal bullion edging and a full bullion fringe.
This is a genuine period ceremonial textile, intended for formal ritual and lodge use. It is not costume or reproduction.
