Antique Baldwin, Tuthill & Bolton Bandsaw Blade Tooth Setter Machine – Grand Rapids, Michigan

Offered for sale is a rare and exceptionally well-preserved piece of American industrial history: an authentic Baldwin, Tuthill & Bolton Bandsaw Blade Tooth Setting Machine manufactured in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Built during an era when machinery was designed for generations of service, this substantial cast-iron tool was used in sawmills and professional woodworking operations to accurately set and index the alternating teeth of large bandsaw blades.

With its intricate mechanism, original components, and impressive mechanical condition, this machine represents an outstanding opportunity for collectors of antique machinery, sawmill enthusiasts, museum displays, or anyone interested in preserving historic woodworking equipment.

Features & Mechanical Condition
  • Original Manufacturer Identification: Retains its original brass Baldwin, Tuthill & Bolton factory identification plate securely mounted to the main bearing housing.
  • Smooth Mechanical Operation: The large hand-cranked flywheel turns freely and smoothly. The alternating tooth-setting mechanisms cycle properly through their full range of motion with no binding or hesitation.
  • Excellent Internal Condition: Linkages, pivots, and setting mechanisms exhibit smooth operation with minimal play and no obvious mechanical issues.
  • Free-Turning Adjustments: Every adjustment screw and alignment control on the machine remains functional and free-moving. None of the adjustment points appear frozen, seized, broken, or damaged.
  • Original Mounting Block Included: The machine remains securely bolted to its heavy old-growth timber mounting block, preserving both its functionality and historical character.
Condition

This machine remains in completely unrestored, as-found condition. Rather than being cleaned, repainted, or altered, it has been carefully preserved exactly as discovered. The cast iron surfaces display a rich, dark industrial patina developed through decades of honest use and storage.

  • No cracked castings observed
  • No broken linkage arms or mounting ears
  • No obvious modern replacement parts
  • Original industrial finish and patina remain intact
  • Mechanically free and operational

Because the machine remains mechanically functional while retaining its original appearance, it presents an outstanding candidate for either a sympathetic restoration or display as an authentic piece of early American industrial equipment.

Historical Significance

Machinery from Baldwin, Tuthill & Bolton is becoming increasingly difficult to find, particularly examples that remain this complete and mechanically sound. Pieces such as this were essential equipment in sawmills, lumber operations, and professional woodworking shops throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Today, surviving examples are prized by collectors of antique tools, industrial machinery enthusiasts, museums, and restorers seeking original American-made equipment.

Shipping

This is a substantial cast-iron machine and will be packed with extreme care. The unit will be heavily padded, securely protected, and professionally boxed to help ensure safe arrival. Calculated shipping is based on actual packaged weight and dimensions.
