Rare small collection of authentic 19th century antique barbed wire mounted on vintage wooden collector sticks. One stick still carries its old paper tag:

That tagged piece is the historically important Henry M. Rose Wrapped Barb, U.S. Patent 198,688, issued Christmas Day, December 25, 1877, to Henry M. Rose of Waterman, Illinois. Rose is the same inventor whose 1873 wooden rail with metallic points was displayed at the DeKalb County Fair—the exhibit that inspired Joseph Glidden, Jacob Haish, and Isaac Ellwood and helped launch the barbed-wire industry that fenced the American West.

Condition: Honest barn-find / collection-room age. Dark oxidized iron, light to moderate rust and pitting, wood lath with handling wear, holes, and old staple/wire ties. Tag is original paper, creased and toned, writing still clear. These are not reproductions and not modern galvanized farm wire. Photos are of the exact lot.

Why this lot matters: Rose’s 1873 wood-and-spike rail is the scarce “sold by the inch” wire because the wood usually rotted away. The 1877 all-wire Wrapped Barb is the piece collectors can still own with a named patent and a period tag.
