🔹 FROM THE COLLECTOR’S TABLE

CHALLENGE CUTLERY CO. — ANTIQUE ELEPHANT TOE / SUNFISH

🇺🇸 Bridgeport, Connecticut | Early American Cutlery

A handsome old Challenge Elephant Toe featuring beautiful dark chocolate-brown jigged bone handles, substantial rounded bolsters, and the desirable double-pull primary blade.

Challenge Cutlery Co. was a respected Connecticut cutlery manufacturer whose history dates to the late 19th century, with production continuing into the 1920s. Its early pocketknives remain sought after by collectors of antique American cutlery.

This 4-inch example has the unmistakable character of an old American sunfish — broad blades, heavy construction, and beautifully aged bone that gives the knife tremendous visual appeal.

🔎 COLLECTOR’S NOTES & CONDITION

â—† Pattern: Elephant Toe / Sunfish

â—† Closed Length: 4 inches

â—† Handles: Beautiful dark brown jigged bone with rich coloration and pronounced texture. There appear to be a couple of previously repaired hairlines. Some localized alteration to the jigging is visible in the repaired areas. A crack near the handle pin can also be seen when viewed from the side.

â—† Blades: Broad primary and secondary blades, both showing evidence of previous cleaning/polishing and use. The primary retains a substantial profile and features the desirable double pull.

â—† Tang Stamps: The primary Challenge stamp is partially obscured by the bolster. The secondary blade is clearly stamped CHALLENGE.

â—† Mechanics: Mechanically sound, with both blades functioning properly.

â—† Overall Assessment: A very attractive antique survivor with previous handle repairs and blade cleaning. Certainly not an untouched example, but one that retains considerable collector appeal.

✦ COLLECTOR’S PERSPECTIVE

There’s something special about these old elephant toes. Their substantial construction, broad blades, and distinctive handle work give them a presence that’s difficult to duplicate.

This Challenge has seen its share of years and some previous attention, but the beautiful old bone and classic proportions still make it a wonderful representation of the pattern.

📸 PLEASE EXAMINE ALL 24 PHOTOGRAPHS CAREFULLY.

I’ve made an effort to photograph this knife from numerous angles, including close-ups of the handle repairs, hairlines, tang stamps, and overall condition. The photographs are an important part of the description.
