Bound in the publisher\'s original dark green cloth with elaborate gilt-decorated spine and gilt cover vignette depicting two children. The decorative spine remains especially attractive and displays well on the shelf.
The volume contains 182 pages with numerous wood-engraved illustrations throughout, including charming scenes of children and dogs as well as several humorous anthropomorphic animal illustrations characteristic of mid-nineteenth-century juvenile publishing.
Published during the Civil War, this compact volume was intended for young readers yet survives today as an appealing example of early American illustrated children\'s literature and decorative Victorian book design.
