Up for sale is an authentic, original antique mounted photograph capturing the devastating aftermath of a flood that has wrecked railroad tracks.
Using Google Lens’s photo analysis, it thinks this depicts a March 1904 flood in West Winfield, Pennsylvania. I compared myself and the buildings do seem to be the same as in other images of the same disaster. This historic image shows the incredible destructive force of Rough Run Creek after it overflowed, completely washing out the railroad bed and leaving the iron tracks buckled, twisted, and suspended in mid-air.
In the center of the antique photo, a crew of local laborers and railroad workers can be seen assessing the damage and beginning the monumental task of clearing debris and rebuilding the line. The historic industrial furnace structure is visible in the background.
This is a fantastic piece of local Western Pennsylvania history, industrial ephemera, and early 20th-century railroad disaster photography.
Condition:
The photographic print features strong contrast, excellent clarity, and sharp details for its age. It is mounted on a heavy, authentic dark grey period cardboard display mount. The mount shows typical signs of age, including some minor corner rounding and edge wear, alongside historical staining on the margins that adds to its authentic, rustic character.
