Antique Dutch wooden speculaas cookie mold / biscuit board dating from the 19th century.
A particularly charming piece of Dutch folk art, carved with two unusual figures: a rider seated on a rooster or cockerel and a second rider seated on a swan.
Traditionally, carved wooden boards like this were used to form speculaas and other molded biscuits. The unusual imagery, naïve carving and warm aged surface also make it a very decorative piece of European folk art.
The board has a beautiful old patina and clear signs of age and use. There are old marks, wear, small holes and natural imperfections to the wood. An old split/crack can be seen on the reverse but the board remains solid.
