Antique English WedgwoodMajolica Candlestick Candle Holder Cinque Cento c1876.
Direct from England, arare and striking antique Wedgwood “Cinque Cento” majolica candlestick, datingto c1876.
This elaborate Renaissance Revival designfeatures a floral-form candle cup above four female busts, with individuallypierced panels depicting figures and flower-filled torchères, all richly moldedwith foliate detail.
The rich polychrome decoration combinesdeep cobalt blue, turquoise, cream and gilt accents, creating dramatic contrastacross the sculptural surface. The pierced architectural stem rises from abroad circular pedestal base molded with acanthus leaves, completing the highlydetailed Renaissance-inspired design.
The underside bears the impressedWEDGWOOD mark, British registration diamond and the circular John Mortlockretailer’s mark. Mortlock was a prominent London retailer of fine china anddecorative wares, with premises on Oxford Street. The Cinque Cento design wasregistered in November 1876, allowing this example to be dated very closely toits period of manufacture.
An exceptional example of VictorianWedgwood majolica, this highly sculptural candlestick displays beautifully fromevery angle and is an especially striking piece for a collection of 19thcentury English ceramics or majolica.
