A beautiful 19th-century French reliquary frame from the Napoleon III period, featuring a finely arranged hairwork cross surrounded by delicate foliage.
The braided hair has been carefully arranged on a light-colored background to form a cross, a traditional symbol of mourning, remembrance and attachment to a loved one. The composition is preserved behind its black-painted wooden frame and original convex glass.
An interesting handwritten note on the back reads: “Il ne faut pas exposer les cadres en cheveux au soleil il les défaçonne tout et c\'est perdu.” This charming detail gives the piece an authentic period character and shows how carefully these delicate hairwork frames were once treated.
The frame can be hung on the wall and would be a distinctive addition to a collection of antique reliquaries, mourning art or 19th-century French decorative objects.
