A wonderfully decorative antique French jewelry casket dating to circa 1900, this substantial oblong box is an exceptional example of the richly ornamented metalwork produced in France around the turn of the 20th century. With its warm aged-gold finish, sculptural decoration, and unusually elongated form, it has the presence of a miniature work of art.The most captivating feature is the lid, which is covered with a remarkably detailed raised pastoral scene rendered in dimensional relief. Figures and animals appear within an idyllic country landscape, surrounded by trees, architectural elements, and abundant naturalistic detail. The deeply modeled surface creates wonderful areas of light and shadow, giving the scene an almost sculptural quality when viewed from different angles.The sides are equally elaborate. Raised floral garlands, swags, ribbons, and scrolling ornament encircle the casket in a distinctly French Neoclassical manner. A delicate beaded border frames the lid, while additional patterned borders finish the lower edge. Even the small feet have been carefully considered, elevating the casket slightly and adding to its refined presentation.
