DescriptionPublished in 1922 during Japan’s Taisho era, this remarkable photo book documents the world of the Japanese Imperial Household nearly a century ago.To a modern viewer, it may appear simply to be a book of palace photographs. At the time, however, places such as the Imperial Palace, detached palaces, and Imperial villas were spaces that ordinary people rarely had an opportunity to see.The book includes photographs of major Imperial sites such as the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, Kyoto Imperial Palace, Sento Imperial Palace, Akasaka Palace, Katsura Imperial Villa, Hayama Imperial Villa, and Shinjuku Gyoen.Especially interesting are the photographs of richly decorated palace interiors, ceremonial rooms, gardens, and other spaces connected with the Imperial Household. Together, they offer a rare visual record of how the Japanese monarchy presented itself during the early 20th century. The volume also contains introductory writings by prominent statesmen Shigenobu Okuma and Admiral Tomosaburo Kato, who later served as Prime Minister of Japan. The work was associated with Man’itsu Tanaka, a long-serving member of the Japanese House of Representatives. This is more than an architectural photo book. It is a historical window into Imperial Japan, combining royal history, architecture, politics, and the visual culture of the Taisho era. Please note that this approximately 100-year-old book shows age-related toning, spotting, wear, and other signs of use. Please examine the photographs carefully for condition.A glimpse into places that were once largely hidden from ordinary public view.Own a Piece of History.Shipping
