$356.22

RARE Antique Green Wax Pendant Seal - Office of the King of Arms of Ireland - In Original Brass Crown Skippet with RibbonOffered is an original pendant seal in green wax, housed in its two-piece brass skippet, suspended on original grey-blue silk ribbon. What it is:
This is not a desk seal, it is the great seal that was appended to a Grant of Arms. The legend around the edge reads:SIGILLVM OFFICII REGIS ARMORVM HIBERNIAE - Seal of the Office of King of Arms of Ireland. In the center is the official shield of the Irish Office of Arms - a cross with a chief bearing a harp, lion passant, and portcullis - the arms used by the Ulster King of Arms in Dublin. Examples are described in old catalogues as "The great seal in green wax is appended by blue and white silk laces."The brass skippet lid is the Crown of a King of Arms. In addition each King of Arms has his crown, the only occasion upon which this is worn being at the ceremony of a coronation. The crown is of silver gilt, formed of a circle upon which is inscribed part of the first verse of the 51st Psalm, viz. "Miserere mei Deus secundum magnam misericordiam tuam" - Have mercy on me O God. Your lid is embossed with that same crown and clearly reads MISERERE MEI DEVS around the base. After 1943 the Irish office was merged as Norroy and Ulster King of Arms - the post held by Sir Gerald Woods Wollaston from 1944-1957, linking this green Irish seal to the red Garter seal previously listed.Measurements:

Thickness of wax: approx 1.5 cm - thick pendant type
Ribbon: grey-blue silk, original, with frayed ends as found
