The text embroidered into this antique bedspread reads "BUON RIPOSO", which translates from Italian to "Good rest" or "Have a good sleep".
This is a classic Italian matrimoniale (wedding) bedspread, traditionally included in a young woman's bridal trousseau (known as a corredo). These heirloom linens were traditionally handmade in Italy out of high-quality white linen or cotton canvas and given as wedding gifts to wish the newlyweds a peaceful life together.
The Lace Inserts: This is a beautiful example of Italian Cantù lace or a similar bobbin/needle lace insert, featuring intricate stylized floral wheels that join the separate panels together.
The tiny webbed window is an embroidery technique known as Punto Tagliato (Italian cutwork) or Reticello, where fabric threads are deliberately cut and wrapped with a buttonhole stitch to form geometric lace windows.
The close-up photos highlight the slubby, fine grid texture of antique slub linen. This slubbing indicates a natural, hand-woven or early mechanical weave.
In the photos with the ring for size reference, you are able to see tiny holes. I think I took pictures of all of them. Overall this piece is in gorgeous condition with no major stains or flaws.
There is no doubt this is a gorgeous artifact.
