Antique Jean Pouyat Limoges Hand Painted Geisha Japonisme Mug JPL 5.75\" For Sale

An unusual antique Jean Pouyat Limoges porcelain mug featuring a hand-painted Japonisme scene of a woman in kimono beneath a brightly colored parasol and flowering cherry tree.

The figure is rendered in soft mauve against a pale celadon-green ground, with pink blossoms extending around the body of the mug. Her striped parasol provides a striking burst of orange and yellow. The large sculptural handle is embellished with raised decoration and remnants of its original gilding.

Made from a Jean Pouyat Limoges porcelain blank and marked J.P. / L / FRANCE to the underside. The individually painted decoration reflects the Western fascination with Japanese art and design that remained influential in decorative arts around the turn of the 20th century.

Gilding on the handle is substantially worn with scattered losses, and there is wear and discoloration around the rim and other areas of the painted decoration.
