Original WWI Third Liberty Loan Honor Flag, circa 1918
Original World War I-era Third Liberty Loan Honor Flag, produced for the U.S. Third Liberty Loan campaign of 1918.
These distinctive red, white and blue flags were awarded to communities that reached their assigned Third Liberty Loan subscription quotas. The three blue stripes identify the Third Liberty Loan campaign.
The flag is constructed from individually sewn fabric panels rather than being printed. It has a reinforced canvas heading with metal grommets.
Provenance: Acquired from an estate sale in South Kingstown, Rhode Island. South Kingstown participated in Liberty Loan fundraising during WWI; however, I have been unable to establish that this particular flag was originally awarded to or displayed by the town. The South Kingstown Public Library was contacted during my research but no photographic or documentary connection to this specific flag could be established. It is therefore being sold with its specific original community attribution unknown.
Condition: Heavily used/distressed antique condition. There are multiple holes, tears, thinning and weakened areas, staining/soiling, fading, discoloration and general deterioration throughout. Please review all photographs carefully. No attempt has been made to clean, restore or repair the flag.
Despite its condition, the original sewn construction, colors and three-stripe Third Liberty Loan design remain readily identifiable. An interesting surviving piece of American WWI home-front history and a potentially worthwhile research piece for a Liberty Loan, flag, militaria or WWI collector.
Sold as an original historical artifact in as-found condition.
