Very rare Serafín Marsal sculpture. He was a Spanish artist born in 1862 and he died in Asuncion in 1956. He moved to Paraguay because of his wife's health in 1907. In this smaller city, he faced economic difficulties. Even with no orders, Marsal started to produce small clay statues that represented the Paraguayan people with perfection.
Serafín Marsal made the figurines from clay from Picolmayo River, and each statuette represented a typical figure of the Paraguayan people with a lot of detail and beautiful finish. He made a mold of the statuettes from which he extracted the essential piece. However, this method was not a multiple-piece system. The finishing of each piece was made by hand, which is why none of the statuettes is the same.
The figurines also have a historical value as they show how the people lived, dressed, and worked in a specific period.
To date, what remained from his works, as the used material is quite fragile, belongs to private collections and to the Museo Memoria de la Ciudad, which has a collection of 36 pieces.
