Antique Miniature Stanhope Binoculars – Napoleon & Monument Français Scene
This is a rare set of antique miniature Stanhope binoculars, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. These were novelty souvenirs rather than functional binoculars, often crafted from bone or early celluloid and decorated with painted floral motifs.
• Material: Likely bone or early celluloid, with remnants of hand-painted floral decoration.
• Size: Miniature, made as a curiosity or souvenir.
• Stanhope Feature: Only the right eyepiece contains a Stanhope lens with a micro-photograph.
• Scene Inside: Features Napoleon in the center, with the Monument Français to his left and other small images of landmarks and historical scenes.
Condition:
• Age-related wear including fading, discoloration, and surface marks.
• Painted floral design is partially worn but still visible.
• Metal fittings have a natural patina.
• The Stanhope in the right eyepiece is intact; images remain visible and recognizable (see example photo).
