Antique Viaticum / Last Rites Shadow Box with Accessories For Sale

This Viaticum / Last Rites Shadow Box dates from the very early 1900\'s and features a chalk ware rendition of Michelangelo\'s \'Pieta\' behind a reverse-painted glass panel. The framing effect of the glass, painted in vivid blues, red, and orange, has gilded details and, in script along the bottom, \"Blessed Be Thy Holy Name.\" All painting is crisp and intact, but the glass panel is missing a small corner piece, as shown in photo #13. A small hinged compartment is fronted with a print of DaVinci\'s \'The Last Supper\' behind glass. This panel opens to reveal a red fabric-lined compartment where the supplies necessary for a priest to conduct the sacrament of \'Extreme Unction\' would be stored. Included here is a silver metal paten for use during Communion which has IHS engraved in among the scratches, a small pressed-glass bottle with raised lettering: \"For Holy Water / Keep Constantly Filled,\" which has a beautifully-molded crown-shaped stopper, a small corked glass vial (possibly for Holy Oil), and a brass hook converter which would allow the unit to be hung from a bedroom\'s picture rail. Two bronze-colored candleholders fit into metal fittings on either side of the \'Pieta.\' The Viaticum is in excellent condition. The original backing paper on the piece is brittle, with small losses.
