Offered is a lovely set of six antique American Belleek individual open salt cellars made by the Willets Manufacturing Company of Trenton, New Jersey, circa 1885–1909.
Each diminutive salt measures approximately 1 3/4" in diameter and 5/8" high. The salts have a low rounded form with subtly faceted rims and are decorated with broad bands of rich hand-applied gold.
The undersides bear the brown BELLEEK / WILLETS factory mark incorporating the distinctive serpent-shaped "W" associated with Willets Belleek.Each has the same hand-painted GBS-style monogram, believed to be a decorator's mark; the decorator has not been identified.
American Belleek was produced in Trenton in imitation of the exceptionally thin, delicate porcelain made famous by Belleek in Ireland. Willets was one of the important late-19th-century American manufacturers of this fine translucent porcelain.
Condition: Five salts are without chips, cracks or repairs. One salt has a small chip to the rim, which is shown in the photographs. There is expected age-related wear and variation to the extensive gold decoration, as pictured. Please examine all photographs as they form an important part of the condition description.
A particularly appealing surviving set of six — wonderful for an American Belleek, Trenton pottery, Victorian porcelain or antique open-salt collection.
