Wonderful pair of antique English pewter hot-water warming plates, circa 1800, retaining their original 1963 antique-dealer receipt/provenance.These substantial Georgian-era warming plates have hollow bodies designed to be filled with hot water to keep food warm at the table. Each features a hinged filling opening at the rim and two hinged carrying handles. Approx. 9.25" diameterThe undersides retain a number of period marks. Visible markings include a “LONDON” label, a crowned X quality mark, and additional shield/rosette-style pseudo-hallmarks or touch marks. These were purchased by my grandparents in England in 1963 and have remained in the family since.Included is the original receipt from W. H. Ridler Ltd., Antique Dealer, 50 High Street, Oxford, dated 20 May 1963.The handwritten receipt identifies them as:
“Pair Pewter Hot Plates circa 1800”
and records the purchase price as £4-0-0.
The original receipt will be included with the plates.Good antique condition for pieces approximately 225 years old. Both show expected age-related patina, oxidation, surface scratching, small marks, spotting and signs of historical use. There are minor dents/irregularities consistent with age. I have not attempted to polish them, and they retain an attractive old pewter surface.
