Henry Clay Hotel Ashland Kentucky Hotel China Art-Deco Dinner Plate 1930\'s
Offered is a very rare 1930\'s era top marked 9\" wide china dinner plate made for the Henry Clay Hotel that was located in Ashland, Kentucky.
This is a very rare and seldom seen pattern from the hotel. I also believe it was only ordered once (or only within a short time).
This plate would have been used for dining room service, banquet hall, lounge, and even for private room service for dinner selections.
This is the heavyweight type steamship, restaurant, and railroad china. It would have been used in connection with the Henry Clay hotel silver soldered - silver plate and glassware. It has only very light usage.
Historically, the Henry Clay Hotel officially opened in 1930\'s as the largest hotel in Ashland. It continued to operate for many years into the 20th Century as one of the city\'s leading hotels providing fine accommodations and amenities for its guest. But as with the case of so many once grand hotels, patronage fell and the decision in 1975 was made to close the hotel. Though all was not lost, as the hotel\'s structure was save and became the Henry Clay House apartments.
Interestingly, this is also the same pattern that was used for the famous John Ringling - Ringling Bros.Circus, private railcar \"Jomar\". It was made by the Mayer China Co. of Beaver Fall, Pennsylvania, and was produced in their most beautiful \"LaMure\" pattern. It was distributed by the Burton restaurant supply company of Cincinnati, Ohio. This \"Henry Clay\" cursive script logo was also used on a more simpler white base Walker China pattern from the hotel in the late 1940\'s with it being produced by the Mayer China co. in the mid 1950\'s. However, this basic white with a pinstripe and cursive script logo was nothing as beautiful as this short-lived pattern by Mayer in the LaMure.
During the era that this plate was made and used, most persons from long distances arriving in Ashland to stay at the Henry Clay would have arrived by passenger train of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad.
