🏺 About Bes in Ancient Egypt
Bes was one of the most distinctive protective deities in Egyptian religion. Unlike many Egyptian gods who were normally represented in profile, Bes was characteristically depicted facing forward, with a powerful body, prominent facial features, beard, and feathered headdress.
He was particularly associated with protection of the household, women and children, childbirth, music, dancing, and the warding away of harmful forces.
His deliberately imposing appearance was part of his protective character: Bes was believed to frighten away dangerous or malevolent influences.
The unusual double-facing configuration of this piece makes the protective imagery especially visually powerful, presenting the deity on opposing sides of the same figure.
