This pendant is an antique Egyptian Revival relic of a classic faience (Egyptian clay) amulet of the deity Sobek. The relic is made from the tradition faience clay which is sitting in an intriguing Sterling Silver arched setting. The pendant is 2” Tall x .4” Wide. The chain is also Sterling Silver and hangs at 9 “-making the necklace 11”. The chain and pendant did not come together but I thought they were a good match in quality and style.
“Sobek was among the oldest deities named in the Pyramid Texts, the texts inscribed on the walls of tombs. He was the lord of the crocodiles and was depicted with a crocodile head.
Some ancient Egyptian sects believed that Sobek created order in the universe and the world when he arose from the “Dark Water” and that he was the creator of the Nile River. He was often associated with fertility.
