You are near the Königssee, looking towards the Obersee. Those jagged heights ahead are part of the eastern reaches of the Alps. Even the smallest patch of white that you see from here is probably a huge snow bank many times higher than this house; the larger mass is part of a glacier, where a great, accumulated weight of snow has turned the mass to ice—a huge river of solid ice, slowly sliding down to melt and run off in mountain streams far below.
Bears and wolves used to own these highland forests, but now they are almost extinct; hunters, as you see, can still find deer now and then. See how interested the small boy is, and notice the airs of an experienced shot and guide with which this mountaineer is opening his father\'s hunting bag.
That chalet of whitewashed stone is a very comfortable home, according to the standards of the region. Notice the stones on the roof, put on to hold each blanket of snow in place; the weight helps thus to keep the house warm. The mother\'s mother cooks and spins and knits in a simple primitive fashion long passed away for sophisticated townspeople. The gorgeous and serviceable stockings you see are home-made.
There is a school which this little fellow is supposed to attend, but the requirements are not very severe. If he stays here and grows up at home he will get the greater part of his education climbing over these mountain pastures, watching the cows and studying the weather, and listening through the winter evenings to stories of old times told by the grown-up men between pulls at their pipes.
