BESWICK · BEATRIX POTTER FIGURINE
Poorly Peter Rabbit
Poorly Peter Rabbit recalls the closing scene of Beatrix Potter’s “The Tale of Peter Rabbit.” After disobeying his mother, eating in Mr. McGregor’s garden and narrowly escaping, Peter returns home feeling unwell. Mrs Rabbit puts him to bed and gives him camomile tea while his sisters enjoy bread, milk and blackberries for supper.
History of Poorly Peter Rabbit and Beatrix Potter Figurines
Beatrix Potter wrote and illustrated “The Tale of Peter Rabbit,” first privately printed in 1901 and commercially published by Frederick Warne & Co. in 1902. The book follows Peter’s forofferden visit to Mr. McGregor’s garden and ends with his mother caring for him after his exhausting escape.
Beswick Pottery began producing officially licensed Beatrix Potter figurines in 1948 under an agreement with Frederick Warne & Co. The company’s modellers and decorators translated Potter’s watercolour illustrations into expressive ceramic characters while preserving their familiar poses and storybook details.
Beswick introduced the Poorly Peter Rabbit figurine in 1976. Modelled by David Lyttleton, the design portrays Peter wrapped snugly in a blanket after his misadventure in Mr. McGregor’s garden. Beswick production continued until 1989.
