Today there is not a single acre of virgin forest left in Denmark. In the 18th C. when the wooded areas of the country had diminished to only 4%, the government began to recognize the threatening shortage of wood. It was then that strict laws were enacted to preserve Denmark\'s forests. Had it not been for these laws, Denmark would probably be without forests today.
The government has made it imperative that new trees be planted when an old stand is cut. It has also imported conifers and broadleaf trees from all over the world, and years of experimentation have determined the trees best suited top Denmark\'s soil and climate.
Experiments with many foreign species of trees resulted in a keen interest in controlled harvesting of forest tree seeds. Today about 1.8M acres, about 10.2% of Denmark\'s total area, are in forests. About 1/4th of the wooded area is owned by the government. Spruce and fir predominate in Jutland.
