Antique & Vintage PhotographsBuilding Fire Smoke Trees China Sign Bosshard Black Star c1930s VTG Photo
This is a silver gelatin photograph that is unmounted and is 10 x 8 inches (254x203mm).
It shows a stone and plaster building with thick black smoke billowing from its roof and a side window. Bare trees line the ground in front of the structure, where low wooden benches or frames are visible. A sign with Asian characters is mounted on the exterior wall. A prominent diagonal crease runs across the left side of the image.
The reverse has a stamp reading 'Credit: Bosshard' alongside a star symbol. Printed text below states 'from Black Star, Graybar Building, New York'. A red stamp at the bottom reads 'Black Star, Cliffords Inn, Fleet Street, London, E.C.4. Picture On Loan.' A handwritten pencil mark is visible in the centre.
It was taken by Walter Bosshard (1892-1975) a Swiss photojournalist who worked for the Black Star agency when he was a correspondent in Beijing between 1933 and 1939.
