The city incorporated on January 1, 1873, when four competing settlements (Tioga, Chicago Junction, Alliance, and New Chicago) merged to resolve disputes over the Leavenworth, Lawrence & Galveston Railroad land office location. The towns settled their rivalry through the intervention of Octave Chanute, the railroad's chief engineer. As a result, the unified city was named in his honor. By its centennial in 1973, the city had grown into a thriving regional hub powered by flour mills, grain elevators, and natural gas.
