Original autograph signature of Charles Nordhoff (1830–1901), dated November 6, 1881, written on an elegant clipped album page/card.
Charles Nordhoff was a major 19th century American journalist, travel writer, and social commentator best known for his influential writings on California and his long tenure as Washington correspondent for the New York Herald. His works helped shape Eastern perceptions of the American West during the post–Civil War era.
Dated “Nov 6 / 81”, this signature comes from a particularly interesting period in Nordhoff’s life. In 1881, he published God and the Future Life and remained an important literary and journalistic voice in the United States. That same year, he visited California’s Ojai Valley, where he became closely associated with local development and civic life. His influence was so strong that the town of Ojai was once named “Nordhoff” in his honor, a legacy still reflected today in Nordhoff High School.
Nordhoff first rose to prominence through widely read books including:
- California: For Health, Pleasure, and Residence
- Politics for Young Americans
- The Communistic Societies of the United States
His vivid descriptions of California life and climate encouraged migration and tourism to the American West during the 1870s and 1880s.
He was also the grandfather of Charles Bernard Nordhoff, co-author of Mutiny on the Bounty.
The autograph is written boldly in dark ink and remains highly displayable. A desirable signature from an influential American journalist, author, and California booster of the Victorian era.
