Charles Sprague (1791–1875) – Autograph Letter Closing
Original handwritten autograph letter closing signed “Charles Sprague,” the noted Boston poet, banker, and civic intellectual of the early 19th century.
Sprague was widely known in his lifetime as the “Banker-Poet of Boston,” moving easily between the worlds of finance, politics, and literature. He was closely associated with Daniel Webster and other leading New England statesmen, and his poetry and public addresses were widely published and praised during the antebellum period.
This piece preserves Sprague’s full formal valediction:
“Very respectfully,
Your obedient servant,
Charles Sprague.”
Executed in period iron gall ink on laid paper, later mounted on an old backing strip, likely by a 19th-century collector or archivist. The signature remains bold, clean, and fully legible, with expected age toning and edge wear to the backing consistent with genuine 19th-century material.
A handsome and display-ready autograph from an important but underappreciated figure in early American literary history.
