Rare and unusual Chinese sculptural Peking Opera face depicting Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, the famous character from Journey to the West.This is a three-dimensional sculptural face rather than a typical flat decorative opera mask and features elaborate hand-finished details, dimensional ornamentation and a red hanging cord on the reverse.The original labels are especially interesting. The large red label identifies “Zhang Ming” (张明) and “Monkey King” (美猴王), while the smaller label references “Journey to the West” (西游记).Research indicates that this style is associated with the traditional Beijing craft known as 彩塑京剧脸谱 (cǎisù jīngjù liǎnpǔ) — sculptural Peking Opera facial art. Published information documents a Beijing artisan named Zhang Ming associated with this specialized craft and the Yang Yudong tradition. However, because the complete provenance of this particular piece is unknown, it is being offered as Zhang Ming labeled/attributed rather than as a definitively authenticated work by that artist.Approximately 6” tall x 4.75” wide.CONDITION: Vintage/pre-owned condition with age-related wear, surface flaking and areas of paint/material loss. One of the small yellow decorative ball ornaments has detached from the face. The original detached ball/spring component is present and will be included with the piece in the package.
