Two original real photo postcards (RPPCs) from Colfax, Placer County, California, mailed during the same September 1919 trip. Both are addressed to Mrs. D.C. Saunders in Lompoc, California.
Colfax Depot RPPC: a busy view of the Colfax railroad yard with a steam passenger train, a second steam engine with caboose, the depot with people on the platform, and the town's hotels on the hill behind. A boxcar in the foreground is lettered "DEPOT COLFAX CAL." The sender wrote "our hotel" with an arrow on the front. The back is dated 9/7/19 at Colfax and signed Carl; he mentions being up 2,500 feet, not far from the Nevada line. 1-cent Washington stamp, Colfax postmark.
Cape Horn from Colfax, Cal. RPPC: the famous Cape Horn cliffside grade of the Southern Pacific (original Central Pacific transcontinental line) above the American River canyon, with a train visible on the ledge. Colfax postmark, September 1919 (year under stamp), 1-cent Washington stamp, with a long handwritten message.
A great pair for Southern Pacific or Central Pacific railroad collectors and Placer County history.
