The Lockheed L-749 Constellation was the first Constellation model capable of regular nonstop transatlantic flights.
It was unveiled by Lockheed in early 1947 as an evolution of the L-649, designed to meet the growing demand for long-range, nonstop air travel across the Atlantic Ocean. It featured weather radar, larger fuel tanks, increasing its maximum range by approximately 1,000 statute miles, and strengthened landing gear and tires to handle the added weight.Jet stacks were introduced on the engines, boosting cruise speed by 15 mph, but increasing noise, which required additional insulation. The L-749 made its first flight on March 14, 1947, and received certification later that month. TWA, Air France, Pan American,KLM, Cubana de Aviación, Línea Aeropostal Venezolana, and Avianca were some of the airlines that provided Constellation service.
Trans World Airlines (TWA) was a major airline in the United States and was founded on 16 July 1930, as Transcontinental and Western Air. The famed aviator Howard Hughes acquired control of TWA in 1939. The airline ceased operations on 01 December 2001, when it was merged with American Airlines.
This L-749A Constellation with registration N6014C was first delivered to TWA on 03 November 1950. It provided service with TWA until October of 1967, when it was sold to Central American Airways with new registration N273R. It went through five more owners, ending up with British Lanzair where it provided service until retired and ultimately written off.
