An expressive wooden sculpture of Christ Crucified, originally forming the central figure of a devotional crucifix. Christ is represented with both arms raised, his head inclined to one side and his mouth slightly open, conveying the suffering and spiritual intensity of the Passion. The carefully modelled anatomy emphasises the ribcage, musculature and elongated proportions of the body. The sculptor has paid particular attention to the expressive facial features, flowing hair and beard, and the deeply carved folds of the perizonium, which is gathered at the waist and falls in elaborate, angular drapery. The figure displays the theatrical movement and emotional character associated with Central European Baroque religious sculpture, while its restrained wooden finish highlights the craftsmanship of the carving. Originally intended for attachment to a wooden cross, the sculpture is now presented independently on a discreet metal display stand.
