Crusader Lead Seal Kingdom Of Jerusalem Facing Bust And Cross 28mm Rare

Item SpecificsCulture: Crusader States (Latin East)Material: Lead (Pb)Object Type: Sigillography / Lead Seal (Bulla)Date Range: 1100–1250 AdDimensions: 28mmCondition: Very Fine (Vf)

The PieceA rare and historically significant Crusader lead seal (bulla) from the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem, circa 12th–13th Century Ad. This 28mm seal features a primitive yet powerful facing bust on the obverse and a distinct Cross Pattee on the reverse. It was used to authenticate documents or property within the Crusader-held territories of the Levant.

Historical ContextFollowing the First Crusade, the establishment of the Latin East required a complex administration. This seal represents the fusion of Western European feudal heraldry with the localized lead-sealing traditions of the Levant. Unlike the standard Greek-inscribed Byzantine seals, this piece utilizes the iconic Cross Pattee, a symbol synonymous with the Crusader military orders and the Frankish nobility of Jerusalem.

Museum ParallelsThe British Museum: Compare to Crusader seals of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem (e.g., Accession 1850,0511.1).Bibliothèque Nationale de France: Reference the Schlumberger collection for Crusader sigillography and Cross Pattee motifs.

Condition ReportVery fine condition. The lead is stable and heavy with a beautiful \"desert\" earthen patina typical of finds from the Jerusalem region. The strike is deep and the central motifs are well-preserved.
