Deutsche Lufthansa (DLH) was the historic national airline carrier based out of Cologne and Frankfurt, West Germany, that operated an extensive global, transatlantic, and European passenger trunk network, connecting major continental hubs through primary operating bases at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and Hamburg. Following the cessation of the original pre-war carrier, a new company was legally incorporated in 1953 to revive West Germany's commercial aviation sector, formally launching scheduled passenger operations in 1955 and rapidly ascending to become one of the most respected, safety-oriented flag carriers in the world. Throughout this defining mid-century expansion chapter, the airline helped pioneer the jet age across Europe and the Atlantic, maintaining a highly advanced commercial fleet engineered for long-haul intercontinental routes and domestic trunk lines, most natively flying legendary aircraft such as the Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation, the Boeing 707, and the Boeing 727 Whisperjet.
