Offered for your consideration is a vintage DORTMUNDER UNION BIER three-liter ceramic stein (over 101 ounces), presumably manufactured in West Germany c.1970.
DORTMUNDER UNION of Dortmund, Germany began brewing their Export Bier in 1873. A pale lager similar to Czech pilsners but with a little more bite, it was Germany’s most popular beer for stein or mug is very large. It stands 10¼” tall, is 4¾” wide at the mouth, 5⅞” wide at the base, and weighs over 4½ pounds empty. If filled to the 3l line—about 1⅝” from the top—it could hold eight (8) 12 ounce beers with plenty of room to spare for foam! At this size, I doubt it has actually been drunk from. It’s more of a prominent bar display piece.
So, please see my large photos and read the remaining description to decide if this superb German stein should join your DORTMUNDER UNION BIER stein is in clean, excellent condition. There are no chips, cracks, or noteworthy blemishes, just some tiny nicks and imperfections from the manufacturing process, largely on the base. Plus, the logo graphics have vivid colors with only negligible enamel loss beneath the protective glaze, all as pictured. And it’s stamped with a W on the base—possibly dual W’s—but I haven’t researched what maker used that marking. Overall, the stein presents exceptionally well.
On a closing note, I advise buyers to be very careful when shopping for this 3 liter stein or any other DORTMUNDER mug on (besides this one, of course). There\'s plenty of error-filled listings from lazy, not-too-bright sellers. For example, a title that advertises a 3 liter stein, but the photos show a half liter (clearly stamped 0.5l); another listing, using the exact same title, is a badly-chipped 5 liter unabashedly pictured in a squalid laundry room setting. Sadly, it seems that the liter unit of measure is as unfamiliar a concept as personal pride is for many of these types.
