David Winter The Old Curiosity Shop 1980 Mould One Translucent Windows RARE:
$400.00

  • This is The Old Curiosity Shop featuring the highly sought-after Mould One \"Translucent Plaster\" variation with very rare red felt and the early printed Guild label.🏛️ The Main Features of This Piece
    • The Base Variation (Red Felt): This is the defining collector feature of this item. The vast majority of standard production runs used green felt. Red felt was used very briefly in late 1980, making it an immediate focal point for variant collectors looking to fill specific gaps in their collection.
    • The Label: It features the early rectangular Guild of Master Craftsmen label. The alignment is a bit offset and hand-cut, which is highly characteristic of the manual assembly done at the John Hine studios during the first year of production.
    • The Structure & Paint: Thewindow panes are not painted green, and they don\'t have the metallic sheen of the gold foil. The are opaque, milky-white color.
When David Winter hand-carved the original Mould One, the window frames were structurally completely hollowed out. In the absolute first few castings, they manually glued gold foil inside the hollow bays. However, for a very brief period right after, the studio experimented with a different method before completely sealing the mould:
  • Thin-Skin Plaster Casting: Instead of messing with tedious strips of foil, the casting team poured the liquid gypsum plaster into the rubber mould in a way that left an incredibly thin, delicate \"skin\" of plaster sealing the back of the windowpanes.
  • The Opaque Look: Because gypsum plaster is naturally translucent when cast extremely thin, it allows light to pass through slightly, creating a milky, foggy, opaque white window glass effect that looks remarkably like real frosted historic window glass.
  • Why It\'s Rare: This \"thin-skin\" method was abandoned almost immediately because the window backings were structurally fragile. If a collector pushed too hard on the windows while dusting, the thin plaster skin would puncture right through into the hollow center of the cottage. To fix this structural weakness, they quickly transitioned to Mould Two, filling the window recesses completely solid with thick, flat, opaque plaster blocks that had to be painted.
The Retirement Timeline Explained
  • The Felt Base Retirement (Late 1980): The vibrant crimson red felt backing was completely abandoned within the first few months of the cottage\'s 1980 release. John Hine Studios standardized all production to classic green felt to create a uniform look across the rapidly growing brand, completely retiring the alternative felt runs.
  • The Label Retirement (Early 1982): The rectangular Guild of Master Craftsmen paper label layout text was phased out shortly after. The studio dropped its mention of the Guild and transitioned to a circular typographic label style.
  • The Full Design Retirement (1983): The overall physical casting mould for The Old Curiosity Shop was permanently broken and retired in 1983. This exceptionally short 3-year commercial lifespan is the primary reason even the standard versions hold more historical weight than pieces that ran continuously through the 1990s.
