Dr. Jayne\'s \"The Beggar Children\" Advertising Trade Card 21st Series c. 1880s: $12.91
This is a captivating antique advertising trade card for Dr. Jayne\'s medical products, featuring a poignant image titled \"The Beggar Children.\" The front of the card displays a beautiful chromolithograph depicting a barefoot young girl and boy, dressed in humble attire, standing outdoors. The girl wears a red scarf and green shawl, while the boy holds a blue cloth. The artistry suggests a narrative of hardship, a common theme used in late 19th-century advertising to evoke sympathy and perhaps link the advertised remedies to relief from suffering. The reverse side of the card clearly advertises Dr. Jayne\'s various remedies: EXPECTORANT for colds, coughs, consumption; VERMIFUGE for dyspepsia, indigestion; and SANATIVE PILLS as a family tonic. It notes this as the \"21st Series\" and states it was \"PRESENTED BY JOHN A. SAVAGE, Otterbein, Indiana.\" The lithographer, R. Knapp & Co., N.Y., is also credited at the bottom. This piece is a wonderful example of Victorian-era advertising, combining art with persuasive text to market health and beauty products. It is perfect for collectors of antique medicine advertising, trade cards, or social history ephemera. Please review all images for condition details.
