A larger than normal equal end three blade Mother of Pearl scaled Split Back Whittler by Joseph Gibbins & Sons. Gibbins was a renowned Sheffield maker who also won a prize at the Great Exhibition of 1851, another at the Paris Exhibition of 1855 and a third in London, 1862. The partnership that formed the company ended in 1869, although it is difficult to determine where this knife predates that separation or was made later, in the 1880’s, when it was continued by Henry Gibbins. Either way, a nice mid to late 19thCentury pocket knife.
Measures approximately 4 inches long overall, closed. Master blade measures approximately 2 3/8 inches long, edge only. Obverse tang stamped “”J. Gibbins & Sons”. Secondary blade measures approximately 1 9/16 inches long, edge only, identical tang stamp. Third small lamb foot blade measures approximately 1 ½ inches long, edge only. Identical tang stamp. Deep luster, high grade Mother of Pearl scales secured by three pins. Obverse with oblong unengraved shield. Brass liners and fine tapering spacer.
Good snap to all three blades with half stops to the two smaller blades. Some light scratching and staining to the blades. Scales good, no chips or cracks. Amazing condition.
