Knuth was a private first class and part of a 95th Infantry Division asked to liberate Metz, a French city surrounded by 11 forts and heavily guarded by the Germans.
On Nov. 14, Knuth\'s battalion of about 300 menattempted to surround one of the largest posts, Fort Jeanne d\'Arc, in an attack.
