The card depicts the dining room of Evelynton Plantation in Charles City, featuring an original Duncan Phyfe table positioned on a red patterned rug beneath a framed portrait of Sarah Ege Lambert.- Publisher: Walter H. Miller, 427 Scotland St., Williamsburg, Va.
- Card Number: 7699Evelynton Plantation was originally carved from the Westover estate and named for William Byrd II\'s daughter, Evelyn. The Ruffin family acquired the property in 1847 under the patriarch Edmund Ruffin, an agronomist known for his soil renewal techniques and who is credited with firing the first shot of the Civil War.During the 1862 Peninsula Campaign, the Battle of Evelynton Heights was fought on the property, resulting in Union forces burning the original plantation structures to the ground. The land remained strictly agricultural for seven decades until 1937, when John Augustine Ruffin Jr. commissioned Richmond architect W.Duncan Lee to construct a new Colonial Revival mansion on the site of the former house. The interior was outfitted with historic antiques, including the Duncan Phyfe dining table originally commissioned for Jacob Ege that is depicted in this postcard view. After 161 years of continuous family ownership, the estate was sold in 2008; Evelynton is now a private residence and the grounds are closed to the public.Shipping and Handling:
