JONATHAN TRUMBULL was a strong supporter of the patriot cause during the Revolutionary War. He was given the nickname “Brother Jonathan” by Gen. George Washington. He served as governor of Connecticut from 1769 until his retirement in 1784.
Offering a WAR-DATE one-page, 4 1/2 x 6, manuscript Express Rider bill, July 1781, noting the need to pay Elisha White Jr. for “riding ninety nine miles to carrie orders from the Governor to the several towns in the county of Windham being gone three days at fifteen shillings a day silver money being Two Pounds, Five Shillings. Elisha White”
In July, 1781, Connecticut was deeply involved in supporting the Revolutionary War by supplying arms, gun powder, food supplies, clothing and equipment. These deliveries were part of a statewide effort to ensure that troops moving south toward New York or Virginia were well supplied.
Coastal towns were frequently raided by the British navy, especially along Long Island Sound, such as New Haven and Fairfield. Even inland towns like Windham contributed militia regiments that could be called to respond to threats or reinforce Continental positions. Connecticut contributions included assigning Express Riders to carry dispatches between towns, the governor and army headquarters.
