FLAT EXTRA LARGE 13\" Antique Cast Iron Skillet Pan Favorite Piqua Ware Ohio FLAT:
$784.00

Crafted in Piqua, Ohio during the golden age of American cast iron, this Favorite Piqua Ware No. 12 skillet showcases everything collectors admire about the brand: an exceptionally fine, lightweight casting, beautifully machined silky-smooth cooking surface, crisp raised markings, and outstanding overall condition. Measuring approximately 13 inches across while weighing just 6.6 pounds, it is noticeably lighter than many comparable No. 12 skillets, reflecting the refined craftsmanship that made Favorite one of America\'s premier foundries. Dead flat on a marble countertop, well seasoned, and ready for another century of service, this is a wonderful example equally suited for serious collectors and everyday cooks seeking heirloom-quality American cast iron.

Age

Based on the markings:

  • \"FAVORITE PIQUA WARE\"
  • Raised \"12\" size marking

This skillet was likely produced circa 1916–1934, with the sweet spot being the 1920s.

This is after Favorite dropped their earlier \"Miami\" markings and before the company was absorbed by Chicago Hardware Foundry in the 1930s.

Why collectors love Favorite Piqua Ware

Favorite never produced cookware in the same quantities as Griswold or Wagner.

Instead, they became known for:

  • exceptionally fine gray iron
  • remarkably thin castings
  • extremely smooth cooking surfaces
  • elegant proportions
  • surprisingly light weight

Among collectors, Favorite is often considered every bit the equal of Griswold.

Many cooks actually prefer them because they heat quickly while still retaining enough mass for even cooking.

This one is unusually light

You measured:

  • 13\" diameter
  • 2.5\" deep
  • 6.6 lbs

That\'s impressive.

Many No. 12 skillets weigh:

  • 7–8½ lbs

The fact that this comes in around 6.6 lbs tells me it received one of Favorite\'s thinner castings.

That means:

  • easier handling
  • quicker heat response
  • more desirable to many collectors

The walls also appear quite uniform, another hallmark of Favorite quality.

Casting quality

The bottom is:

  • very crisp lettering
  • sharp edges
  • remarkably even surface texture

The machining is also excellent.

...Just slightly thicker than a U.S. nickel

That\'s classic Favorite.

They were famous for producing cookware that felt refined rather than clunky.

Cooking surface

One of the biggest selling points.

  • silky smooth
  • only one tiny patch of pin-prick casting dots (see finger point pics)
  • No obvious utensil marks

That is outstanding.

Many collectors specifically seek Favorite because these surfaces rival—or even exceed—Griswold\'s mirror-like finish.

Flatness

Lays flat on a marble counter

ConditionExcellent

✔ No cracks visible

✔ No repairs

✔ Nice even seasoning

✔ Crisp markings

✔ Excellent rim

✔ Very little utensil wear

✔ Original casting lines still visible

The small area of tiny casting pits on one side appears to be an original foundry imperfection rather than damage.

Why No. 12 is special

This wasn\'t an everyday family skillet.

A No. 12 was a serious piece of cookware.

It was commonly used for:

  • frying several steaks
  • whole chickens
  • cornbread for large families
  • biscuits
  • roasting
  • cooking over wood stoves

Many households never bought one because they were expensive; Consequently, fewer survive today.
