First Lady Mamie Eisenhower Writes She And \"The General\" Are Ill:
$245.00

Single page, 6 ¼ x 9, TLS, Jan. 13, 1969, with postscript in her hand, former First Lady Mamie Eisenhower thanks her friends Caroline Smithewaite and Carol Ann for sending Stowaway Sweets, which were “thoroughly enjoyed.”

She continues, “Our Christmas was not the happiest as I joined the General in being ill. I had acute asthma which was complicated by the flu. I have returned to our Farm to fully recuperate and will miss my husband terribly. However, I will be able to visit with him very soon.

“The General keeps his high spirits which is a blessing and he receives the very best of care at the hospital.

“It was distressing to have to miss our grandson’s wedding; however, we did have closed circuit television on our rooms so that we could see the children and hear the whole ceremony...”

Postscript in her hand, “...I will miss being with you all this spring after fourteen years. Mrs. Moore is in Florida, and I talk to Mrs. Nelson most every day.”

Mrs. Eisenhower was referencing her grandson David’s wedding to Julie Nixon, daughter of former President Richard Nixon.

President Eisenhower died on March 28, 1969, just two months after this letter was written.

The letter is in excellent condition with a very clean envelope, postmarked from Gettysburg, PA.
